Nurses for Kaine
Tim Kaine knows that nurses are important to the nation’s health care, jobs, and the economy. With more than 3 million nurses, the nursing profession is the largest segment of the nation’s health care workforce.

As Governor, Tim Kaine championed a number of initiatives important to nurses:
• Expanded education programs for nurses and other health care professionals.
• Increased nurse faculty salaries by 10% in an effort to address the nurse faculty shortage.
• Supported the establishment of Virginia’s Healthcare Workforce Data System to improve data collection and measurement of the healthcare workforce with initial focus on nurses & physicians.
• Worked to ban smoking in restaurants, bars and state buildings.
• Made significant reforms to the state’s mental health care system.
• Appointed two nurses in key positions in his administration:
-Secretary of Health and Human Resources
-Director for the Department of Health Professions
Tim Kaine understands that the growing nursing shortage can affect every aspect of the U.S. health care delivery system and contribute to diminished patient care. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that registered nursing will have the greatest job growth of all U.S. professions in the time period spanning 2010–2020, with the economy demanding over 700,000 new nurses in that time. HRSA projects that, absent aggressive intervention, the shortage will grow to more than 1 million RNs – representing a shortage of 36 percent – by 2020.
Assuring that Virginians have access to sufficient numbers of nurses is a top priority with Nurses for Kaine. This includes programs aimed at increasing the supply of nurses and nursing faculty to educate the future nursing workforce. Nurses and advanced practice nurses (nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and clinical nurse specialists) play a vital role in increasing access to health care, assuring quality and safety in health care, and care at reasonable cost for all Virginians.
Nurses for Kaine include nurses from all over the Commonwealth of Virginia who support Tim Kaine for the U.S. Senate and promote Tim Kaine's campaign through personal networks by sharing his vision for healthcare, jobs and the economy.
Messages from Nurses for Kaine
Sandra Whitley Ryals
Nurses for Kaine Leader; Former VNA President, Kaine Appointee
“I support Tim Kaine because he listens, understands, and acts positively on important issues, including health care, not only for today, but also for the future.
Health care is important, not only for quality of life issues, but also for jobs and the economy. The growing nursing shortage affects every aspect of the U.S. health care delivery system because we know that a sufficient supply of nurses is critical in providing our nation’s population with quality health care.
From the time that Tim Kaine ran for Lieutenant Governor, to becoming Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Tim Kaine listened and understood the dynamics of the nursing shortage, impact on health care, jobs, and the economy.
I am very passionate about nursing, the health care challenges facing this country, and the need for our elected officials to stand up for people today.
I believe very strongly that Tim Kaine is the right candidate, at the right time, for all the right reasons, to represent the people in the U.S.Senate!
Please join with me today in supporting Tim Kaine for the U.S. Senate!"
Elected Official, Board of Supervisors, Nelson County
“Of all the legislators I have worked with in my many years of public service in my rural community and in my work as a nurse-practitioner, Tim Kaine is the only one who truly understands the myriad issues surrounding health care. As a three-term member of the Nelson County Board of Supervisors and former School Board member, as a member and former chair of the VACO Health and Human Services Committee, as a member of the Board of Directors for the Sexual Assault Resource Agency and the Jefferson Area Board of Aging, among others, I know personally and professionally how the lack of access to good health care profoundly affects not just an individual’s well-being, but the entire community’s, from health care providers to the helping organizations to local government, and ultimately, the taxpayers. Time Kaine gets it, and he knows that providing opportunities to educate and prepare our health care workforce to meet the coming demands to increase access to quality care is key. We all want a good, healthy life, and Tim Kaine will work hard to help us attain that goal.”
Oncology Nurse Practitioner
“I support Governor Tim Kaine for U.S. Senate because he is committed to maintaining and improving upon the Affordable Care Act which will provide access to care for thousands of Virginians. As a Nurse Practitioner delivering cancer care to rural Virginians, I have seen the devastating effects of being both under- and un-insured. As Governor of Virginia, Tim Kaine championed several initiatives of importance to nursing and I believe he understands the important role that Advance Practice Nurses play in the provision of safe and quality healthcare. He understands that Advanced Practice Nurses can partner with physicians and other health care professionals to help redesign health care in the United States. As our next U.S. Senator, I trust that Tim Kaine will reach across party lines to help remove arbitrary barriers and restrictions that prevent Advance Practice Nurses from practicing to their full potential as cost-effective health care providers.”

Registered Nurse – Board Certified, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse
“I am a Direct Care Nurse on a Psychiatric Unit. I have followed Tim Kaine's political journey since he was the Mayor of Richmond, Virginia. He is a friend of Nursing and Health Care. As Governor, he signed an order promoting efforts to block gun sales to people that were involuntarily committed to mental health agencies. He supports women's rights regarding our right to make our own decisions about our health. As a former civil rights lawyer, he supports access to care issues through the Affordable Care Act. I am also an Army brat and his commitment to veterans and military families through the Wounded Warrior Initiative is phenomenal.”
