Richmond, VA - Today, former First Lady Anne Holton campaigned on behalf of her husband, Tim Kaine, in Richmond. Holton hosted an afternoon discussion at the Greek Grill Cafe with more than 25 local women to share her husband's strategies to strengthen the economy and create jobs. During the hour-long conversation, Holton emphasized every woman's right to equal pay for equal work and freedom to make her own medical decisions, and discussed Kaine's record of expanding economic opportunities for women and all Virginians.
Before opening up the conversation for questions, Holton outlined Kaine's economic approach to strengthen the economy and create jobs by investing in our small businesses and developing a talented workforce.
"As Governor, Tim worked across the aisle to keep Virginia moving forward even as we faced the worst economy since the Great Depression," said Holton. "His leadership in Virginia has prepared him to fix the mess in Washington. He knows how to create jobs and encourage economic growth through a balance of necessary cuts and strategic investments in education because he did it in Virginia."
Holton went on to highlight Kaine's commitment to promote rights and opportunities for women throughout his career. In his first Executive Order as Governor, Kaine banned discrimination in state hiring to make Virginia’s workforce more welcoming, representative, and fair. He also dramatically increased state contracts with small, women-owned, and minority-owned businesses.
"If you look at Tim's career of service in Virginia, you see he has always made the needs of Virginia women and families a priority," said Holton. "As our next Senator, he will fight to close the wage gap between our sons and daughters and continue investments in our children's education. And you can be confident, if you send Tim to Washington, that he will stand up against efforts to roll back the clock on women's health."
