Nuclear
Nuclear energy provides about 20 percent of the country’s electricity and is an important part of an all of the above energy strategy. Virginia’s dual-unit North Anna and Surry systems generate more than 36 percent of the state’s electricity. This electricity is baseload power that is always available and produces no air pollution. In addition to being a viable energy source for the Commonwealth, these facilities create jobs. A nuclear energy facility could create 1,400 to 1,800 high-paying jobs during construction; with peak employment estimated as high as 3,500 jobs. Facility operations could yield 400 to 700 jobs.1
• As Senator, I will look for ways to make our nuclear energy facilities safer and more modern to encourage their continued role in our nation’s energy production.
