Volunteer Spotlight: Shirley Hollingsworth

By Nickie Titus

It’s a great pleasure to introduce this week’s Volunteer Spotlight, Shirley Hollingsworth. Shirley is a mother of 3 beautiful children and is married to her husband Carl, an active duty member of the U.S. Army. Their family has resided in Manassas for more than 12 years, where Shirley has been an active volunteer and member of the community.

Please take a moment read more about Shirley below.

Where in VA do you live?

I have lived in Virginia all of my life. My family and I currently live in the Summer Lake neighborhood of Manassas.

Why do you support Tim Kaine?

I support Tim Kaine because of his strong record as Governor of Virginia and his approach to growing our economy. As a mother, I especially like how he was able to expand pre-K in Virginia. His commitment to improving the education system as a senator is also important to me.

What would you say to someone who’s interested in volunteering?

Volunteering is a great way to support your community. Moving our country forward really does “take a village.” I encourage everyone to volunteer. It is a valuable experience, especially if you have more time on your hands.

Do you have a favorite story from volunteering?

My buddy Harriet Carter and I always knock on doors together. One time we were able to register a new 18-year-old voter. It was great to be able to spend time together in different communities and get someone involved in the process for the first time!

What’s your favorite place in Virginia?

Our family enjoys spending a great deal of time at the Boys and Girls club here in Manassas. It’s a great community resource for our kids.
