Volunteer Spotlight: Lonnie Colson

By Nickie Titus

I’m excited to introduce you to this week’s Volunteer Spotlight, Lonnie Colson. Lonnie was born in North Carolina and moved to Newport News in 1973 where he has been an active volunteer for decades.

Read more about Lonnie below.

Where in VA do you live?

The Denbigh area of Newport News.

Why do you support Tim Kaine?

I personally feel Tim Kaine is inspirational and a great model of decency and civility.

Why do you think volunteering is important? What would you say to someone who’s interested in volunteering?

Volunteering is not as difficult as you think. You meet a lot of nice people, and it puts a local face on the candidate! It’s a neighbor, saying they have confidence in this person, which is pivotal.

What’s your favorite Virginia landmark/place?

There are so many great places.  My two favorites are probably Cold Harbor Battlefield, and the Route 5 Civil War Trail because it is very scenic and holds a lot of history.

Who was the first person you voted for or the first time you really cared about politics?

I’ve been political all my life. The most memorable campaign of my life was John F. Kennedy. The excitement was immeasurable.

Have you met Tim in person? Tell me about it.

I’ve met Governor Kaine a couple of times. My most memorable meeting was at a stop in Newport News when he was Governor. He seemed down to Earth, and gave good, clear, and concise answers.

Now that you have read about Lonnie and his passion for volunteering, I hope you will take a moment to sign up to volunteer below.  As Lonnie said, volunteers are a pivotal part of our campaign effort, and we cannot succeed without you.
